Am I “Healthy” after Cancer?

I had to think twice before I answered, “I am healthy today,” 3 years after my breast cancer diagnosis. Have you thought about what it means to be “being healthy?” New definition is needed, let’s think about that.

I underwent surgery on removing a fibroid from uterus, myomectomy, 6 weeks ago. I had to do some pre-surgery tests. As I was answering all the questions for my medical condition, almost all the answers were “no” “no” “no” and “no” for about 30 items such as heart disease, diabetes, drug use, and smoking. No for all except about breast cancer.

Then, the nurse was excitedly saying: “Oh, you are practically healthy!”

I felt it was such an awkward comment to receive because;

  • I was there for a surgery
  • I once thought I might be dying and went through the horrible cancer treatments. The side effects of chemotherapy lingered for a really long time.

The first part is OK, having a fibroid itself is not harmful. So, even I go for the surgery, I am healthy. Then the second thought was more interesting and that let me wonder about that for awhile.

3 years after finishing my 4 months long chemotherapy treatment, all these times, I always felt I had some side effects remained in my body from the treatment. Well, partly, I still take a daily Tamoxifen medication for breast cancer treatment, ongoing. That might add the side-effects feeling, too. Over time, the side effects were gradually decreasing, such as short memory issues, aka. Chemo-brain, weak muscle, fatigue, neuropathy that I could not go stairs, weaker vision, and some anxiety and loss of confidence in my body appearance with hair and scars.

So, can I really say that “I am healthy” even after harsh cancer treatments?

The answer is probably subjective, but when one can get back to a “normal” lifestyle, we should be able to say “I am healthy” after a major illness. This normalcy may be a new normal after the illness, but if one can carry on a normal life without thinking about the illness much, then I think we can say “healthy” again.

Thanks to medical progress, our longevity is much longer. therefore…The chances of getting cancer in a lifetime is very high, 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women. I got it when I was 36 years old, no family history, no smoker, little alcohol, 5 days a week cardio exercise, stayed in fit, home grown veggie garden, more veggies than meat homemade meals 95% of time. I was a proud healthy woman. My experience was that cancer did not discriminate, people get cancer. Don’t assume that you don’t get it. Assume that the chances are really high to get some form of cancer in the lifetime.

Here is my conclusion:

  1. Assume that we get cancer and cancer does not discriminate.
  2. We have to catch it early.
  3. Get it treated.
  4. Get back to a “normal” life (even it may be a new normal lifestyle).
  5. Then we are “healthy” by maintaining the body.

Low cost and easy early detection of a type of cancer, the technology and sciences are making a progress. This Ted Talk by Jimmy Lin was inspirational and very hopeful to my ears.

Readers who may be in the middle of your battle, I recommend you to focus on the immediate future, one step at a time. I am hoping that your treatment is working on you the best and I hope you will gain the “normal” in your future. The science is making progress in cancer research by months, if not by days. Hang-in there.
