I have marked my 8th cancerversary this year.
“WOW, 8 years.”
A lot of things have happened. This is my milestone so far:
- Stage 1 treatments completed (mastectomy, chemotherapy, 5-year hormone therapy, egg-retrieval, and reconstruction)
- Completed my Pd.D. in Economics.
- Wrote a chapter “Economic Theories of Fashion,” in Fashion Studies.
- My cancer journey story is in a chapter of the book “TOUGH: Women Who Survived Cancer.”
- Featured in magazines and web media
- I completed the Certificate of Millinery program at the Fashion Institute of technology
- Created a hat business
- Created together with a former student; Relaxip, a garment to help other people with shoulder issues
- Being a model
- Changing my status from being an adjunct to a full-time assistant professor at the FIT.
- Receiving Stage 4 rediagnosis
- Checking off my bucket list… mostly visiting different places. Still a work in progress…
- My son was 8 years old and now 16 years old.
- My family has expanded with two dogs.
8 years ago, I could not imagine my life would continue. I thought it was the end of it and no more. No, I was not pessimistic. I was just ignorant. I did not understand the scope of this disease. I have never met anyone who had/has been surviving for many years since the original diagnosis. At age of 36, when all of my friends had been pretty much on the average age of being cancer-free. My reaction might be the average as well. It just happened to me.
Since then, there were many days and nights I felt physically and mentally extremely challenging. I cried a lot by myself and with my friends and families. “Death and life,” not the other way around, became my obsession and I thought about them a lot. I know the profound dark side of life that my own miscopied cells try to kill me.
But because of this darkness, the other side -that is my “normal” side of life- became much brighter. A new term I acquired the last summer was “chiaroscuro.” According to Britanicca.com: “technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects.” I still resist saying that “cancer is a gift.” I don’t think nobody should receive this “gift.” It is true that I learned a lot from it and it changed my perspectives in good ways in general. I don’t want to let every day pass me in the blink of an eye. I live much more mindfully to whatever I chose to do, well, maybe except my continuing every three-week treatment, I still don’t like to have it! 8 years ago, I probably did 17 chemo treatments. My next one will be my 40th of Kadcyla -Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer treatment. In total, I am about to do my 57th treatment, and the number keeps growing.
I am grateful to be here with you. So many of you have shown me how to be helpful, supportive, and empathetic to others in so many ways! I just want to shout out that I am so thankful for this life I have. I really hope to keep counting my cancerversaries with you years from now, too!
Love, Yoko Katz
「chiaroscuro(キリアスキュロ)」という単語。
