Day1: After 4th Chemo

yoko katz October 9, 2014 4 comments

The picture is from yesterday when I went for my 4th chemotherapy.

Yesterday, thanks for a nurse who was confident to do the IV insertion, the entire chemo session went very smoothly. I could not help but to ask her if she was confident to do it as soon as I was escorted to my chemo room. My 3rd chemotherapy three weeks ago, another nurse failed to do the IV insertion twice and it was very traumatic for me to go back to the chemo unit at this time.

For my 9 AM chemo room appointment, I checked in at 7:45 AM. Their pharmacy department once confirms that I am at the hospital, then they can start mixing my personalized chemo blend. Medicines are very expensive. In the recent New York Times report reveals the cost of a part of my injection medicines, which came up to about $10,000 per month without insurance. I patiently waited for the room. This time, I went in about 9:40 AM. Not too bad. The last time, I waited until 11 AM. I was out from the room by 12:40 PM.

Those are the pictures when I got home from the chemotherapy :-). I am doing great for that time, later I was in bed right after dinner.

Well, the biggest highlight of yesterday was that I had a TV interview appointment at Today Show of NBC right after the chemotherapy. They have been focusing on a topic of cancer for its program. When I have heard of its opportunity from a breast cancer support group Share that I had attended about a month ago, I quickly responded that I had messages to deliver. I was not sure if I could make to the TV recording appointment as I had not much control over the timing of my chemotherapy. The recording time was set for other 4 current and past cancer patients. Thanks for the smooth chemotherapy at the hospital, I could make it on time. The TV team was also understanding of my condition and priority, and arranged a ride for me from the hospital to the studio. That was very helpful, too. I think I did OK with it. I am counting on their editing skill! The broadcast will be in next week. I don’t know exactly when yet.

Now you know why I dressed up for the chemotherapy. It was my highlight of not only the day, but for this healing process as well. It was a process for me to deal with my breast cancer in rather positive way than being depressed about it. The fact that I had to face this life does not change whether I do it positive or depressed. I decided to heal this with some help from fashion, which I love. It brings me physical and psychological support for myself and many people who come across me are very supportive and happy to see me fighting with my cancer in my own way in my unfortunate health condition. That in turn gives me more strength. I needed to dress up well for my special opportunity.

[Day of my chemo: Physically] This time, I did well. I went to bed much earlier than usual. By 9 PM, I was in bed sleeping. I took an anxiety/anti-nausea pill after my interview.

[Day of my chemo: Emotionally] The smooth chemo session was a huge relief for me after the traumatic experience at the last time. I don’t say I was pleased with the chemo session because honestly it sucks, but if I have to do, that was the best way.

[Day 1: Physically] I was up in the morning, setting up my facebook. I could not do that last chemo session. I took all of the necessity medications. I had extra medication for anti-nausea. I feel hot. At 4 PM, I went to bed for a nap. I had dinner, but I don’t have appetite.

[Day 1: Emotionally] I can tell how much damage it did on me for the last chemotherapy. This time, I am not great, but I can deal with this. Half way is done, completed!
