National Mammography Day (乳房X線検査の日)

Today is National Mammography Day! Check your to-do list now and make an appointment for your annual check up. (or ask your wife or girlfriend to do it)

  • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
  • In 2014, an estimated 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S.

(data source from BreastCancer.org)

  1. Mammograms can save your life. It reduces your risk of dying from the disease by 25-30% or more!
  2. Don’t be afraid. It is fast procedure (20 minutes).
  3. Get the best quality you can. If you have dense breast or are under age 50, try to get a digital mammogram.
  4. Mammography is our most powerful breast cancer detection.
  5. An unusual result does not always mean you have breast cancer.

(I could not find the online version of the advertising I found on my local paper, I typed up some of the highlight!)

Where can you get a mammography?

  • National Cancer Institute (1-800-4-CANCER)
  • American Cancer Society (1-800-ACS-2345)

I never had my mammography until the time I discovered my cancer. I was 36 years old. I felt a lump on my breast and checked myself in for the very first mammography, “just to be safe.” It was unfortunate that I had cancer, but I am glad I did it then because it was caught early. It can be scary, but with today’s research and treatments, it is truly worth catching it early.

I once had an opportunity to go for mammography when I was 32 years old. My gynecologist told me it was a good idea to take a baseline. I called up a facility, but they told me that it could trigger a false positive with young dense breasts. It is probably true, but they should not have told me that I should have waited until age 40. Since then, my mind is set so that I would do my first mammography at age 40 and “I do not worry about it until then.”

It is rare for women under age 40 to become breast cancer. But that does not mean that they are cancer-free. Somehow my mind set was that I don’t have to worry about it until age 40. That was wrong. That mind set let me ignored twice when I noticed my lump at the beginning.

The chances of me getting the breast cancer in the next 5 years with my per-diagnosed condition, it came out to be only 0.3%. (Use this link for the calculation.) I have been and been known as health conscious as eating healthy and doing exercises. But things can happen. It is scary, but be open minded for me!

I found an informative article here for you to read more about screening. It is recommended that women over 40 should do the mammography. It is also important to know if you are a high-risk type (testing positive for BRCA 1 or 2, having dense breasts, having one or more first-degree relatives (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer). There are ways to do preventative approach and you should talk to your doctor about it.

So, let’s check your (or your wife’s or girlfriend’s) to do list and make an appointment for the mammography. If you do, that means a lot to me!
