A boutique for breast cancer patients (Day8)

yoko katz September 25, 2014 2 comments

I did not expect to see this, but this is a boutique for breast cancer patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC.

What I did not expect was this such strong and passionate energy from this store. If I see this store on street level, I might think this must be an adult goods store. Instead of concealing a physical and psychological images of breast cancer patients, this is strong and rather provocative styling of a store for breast cancer.

I have been dealing with all kinds of “issues” relating to being female at the each step since I became breast cancer. Especially, a step by step, I lost what I loved being about woman. My left breast had the cancer. I was taken photographs of both of my naked breasts at different doctor’s offices (for reconstruction purpose, but still I was not happy with that). I have some small and large scars on my breasts. I don’t have my nipple any more. When something touches my left breast it is basically numb for life. Currently, my breasts are not symmetrical without a bra. I want to have another child. I needed to save my fertility as much as I could. I set aside some eggs for now. I also made my ovaries in sleep so to protect them from the chemotherapy. Because of that, I am menopause at age 36 (for now, I hope). Because of the created menopause condition and the fact that I am under chemotherapy, I am not up to anything sexual at all, I mean at all. That is one of the last thing in my mind. I lost my long straight hair that I loved and cared for. I don’t have much energy to do my facial care. As long as it is washed and put some cream on, that is it, too tired to take care of it well. I found deeper and faster appearance of wrinkles as ever now in this 5 months. All these female issues I carry with the breast cancer at each step, I have been really sad inside. Breast cancer forced me to reassure that I was female. No thanks, I did not need that reassurance to think that I was female!

Then there it was, the store with somewhat positive energy. Pink wig mannequins, nice assorted colors of bras and head-wraps. I thought I should be hiding my body image, but the front window, a proud looking mannequin with red underwear welcomes shoppers. Cool! I love it! Being breast cancer, that is such unfortunate, really. I wish I were not. But I have to live with it and if I have to anyway, I’d better be happier than depressed for myself and for my family and friends. Every single chance that I can be emotionally happier, I need to collect those moments and embrace them tightly with me. I thank the boutique to be this way rather than serious and dry looking. It was a great discovery that I wanted to share the world!

Day 8 After 3rd chemotherapy

[physically] Less nausea from yesterday (medication: morning, early evening and probably before going to bed). I have been up for a whole day today for the first time after the last chemotherapy. No appetite. No sweet at all.

[emotionally] Relaxed.
