I came back from my 15th targeted cancer therapy. I visited a new chemotherapy treatment building. I normally go to NYC to do the treatment, but the hospital opened up the new building in my area recently.

I chose the blue wig to have my debut to this new cancer treatment facility. I am not doing this lightly despite the way it looks. Each one of cancer patients fights for lives at their degree. I also have been suffering physically and mentally with this illness on my own terms, I thought there was a great chance of dying within 5 years, and I did not want to give up fashion. I found my approach had been helpful to me, my family, friends, colleagues, students, readers and total strangers on the streets. People really like my spirits and guts I have to fight this way at this difficult time.

At first, nobody said anything to me at this suburban treatment center today (I usually get a lot of comments in the city). But sure enough, I received so much attention at a waiting room, with a look, wipers and eye contacts. Only until at my individual compartment that many nurses came to comment on my wig. One of them said to me “that is the way to go.” I agree!

The latest cancer treatment facility:

1) Calling tag … each patient is given a GPS tag that one can freely move around the facility because nurses can pin-point where you are to call for your time. This reduces a stress that “they may call me at any time” and waiting for 3 hours for my turn. … But I was trying to be fashionable and I had to carry that around my upper body somewhere showed that I was a cancer patient. If you don’t have one, you don’t know whether they are patients or friends and families who came along. The tag is the sign for a “cancer patient.” (I guess, wearing the blue wig at the cancer treatment center was an obvious sign.)

2) A touch panel gadget … each treatment chair came with a touch panel computer with many features to kill time easily. (I remember my first chemotherapy lasted for about 5 to 6 hours.) TV and internet access for sure. Skype was interesting. I signed in my account and called my parents in Japan and my husband in his office. Online food delivery orders from nearby restaurants. Every time a nurse walks into my room, her/his name shows up on the screen. I can call them by one touch on the screen.

I wonder if this facility can accommodate with “cold caps ” for patients (Cold caps may prevent from hair loss during chemotherapy). But if you loose hair, wigs are just fine!

Another one treatment is done!
